How to Use the Addition Chart

The addition chart shows the sum of any two numbers from 0 to 12:

  1. Find the first number in the leftmost column
  2. Find the second number in the top row
  3. Where the row and column meet is your answer (the sum)

Example: 7 + 5 = ?
Find 7 in the left column, 5 in the top row. Where they meet shows 12.
So 7 + 5 = 12

Addition Facts to Know

  • Adding 0: Any number plus 0 equals itself (5 + 0 = 5)
  • Adding 1: Just count up one number (7 + 1 = 8)
  • Doubles: Adding a number to itself (4 + 4 = 8)
  • Making 10: Learn pairs that make 10 (3+7, 4+6, 5+5)
  • Order doesn't matter: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3 (commutative property)

Patterns in the Addition Chart

Diagonal Lines

Notice that all cells on a diagonal line have the same value. This is because when you move down one row and left one column, you add 1 and subtract 1, keeping the sum the same.

Symmetry

The chart is symmetric along its diagonal. This reflects the commutative property: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3, so these appear in mirror positions.
