Understanding Prime Numbers
What is a Prime Number?
A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself. The first few primes are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13...
The Only Even Prime
2 is the only even prime number. All other even numbers are divisible by 2, so they cannot be prime.
Prime Factorization
Every integer greater than 1 can be expressed as a product of prime numbers in a unique way (Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic).
Infinitely Many Primes
There are infinitely many prime numbers. Euclid proved this around 300 BCE, and it remains one of the most elegant proofs in mathematics.
